Sleep is essential if you’re an athlete. Here’s one trick to help improve sleep quality.
A couple of my athletes have had trouble falling asleep or staying asleep. When this problem is present the night before the race or the night after the race, I don’t worry too much about it. It’s a common problem. I get more worried if athletes cannot get quality sleep over the long haul. One very simple thing that has helped numerous athletes improve sleep quality is keeping a daily journal. One or two hours before bedtime I have them write down all the things that worry them. I don’t care how they do it – list form or paragraph...

I finished the Austin Rattler, can you predict my Leadville 100 Mountain Bike Race time?
A rider finished the Austin Rattler a few weeks back and scored a spot at the prestigious Leadville 100 Mountain Bike Race. The rider asked what his time might be given a particular time at Austin. Good question. I sampled the 2013 Austin race and cross-referenced names to the Leadville 100 event. Below is the sample: Before I head into discussion, the disclaimer is I don't know any of the athletes in the list and I don't know what long list of variables affected each person's training or their races. That written, here are some interesting things to note: Ten...

Swim Options for an Olympic Distance Triathlon Plan
During a consulting session, an athlete using my Olympic Distance Triathlon Beginner Plan asked about doing some longer swims for the Saturday sessions. I told him I would post some alternative main set workouts here in the blog. For those of you using my book, Triathlon Training Basics, these swims can be used for the plan in Chapter 7, Fit Beginner Plan for an Olympic Distance Triathlon. On Saturday swim workouts, there is a repeating pattern of 4-8 x 200s. The intention is that as you gain fitness, you can bump the number of 200s that you do up -...

Q and A - How to manage altitude for the Leadville 100 Mountain Bike Race
Q. I read your advise in 2012 on the Yahoo forum to get to Leadville around Wednesday before the Leadville 100 Mountain Bike Race. I'm racing again this year and I have the opportunity to go to Colorado three weeks early. I currently live in Minnesota. I'm wondering if you can give me your thoughts. What is best? Should I stay at Copper Mountain for two weeks then move up to Leadville? Stay in Copper the whole time, etc. In 2012, I stayed in Keystone for 10 days and felt miserable the entire time. On race day I was seeing...

Clarification on swim pace for Muscular Endurance Distance swim card #3
Q. In "Swim Workouts for Triathletes" Muscular Endurance (Distance) card #3, it says Race Pace + :30. Does this mean go 30 seconds faster than race pace? What confuses me is it also says “swim each 50 1-5 sec. Faster than race pace” -- T. S. A. Hi T.S., First, thanks for picking up a copy of Workouts in a Binder for Triathletes. Sorry for the confusion on ME Distance #3. What is intended on the card is that your swim interval for the 300s is your race pace, plus 30 seconds. For example, let's say you can average 1:30's...

15 Tips on How to Score the Leadville 100 Mountain Bike Last Ass Trophy
The first year I race the Leadville 100 Mountain Bike Race, I managed to place last. Yes, that's right, the official last finisher. To be an official finisher, you must complete the race under 12 hours. My time was a comfortable 11:59:55 - I had an entire 5 seconds to spare! To commemorate that achievement, I was awarded the hind-quarter horse trophy - the Last Ass Award. I have one of only 20 of these trophies given over the last 20-years of racing. Should you want to score a Last Ass Award, I will share with you some of...
